Carpet stains have a way of appearing at the worst possible times. The good news is that most can be removed if you act quickly and use the right approach.
Golden rule: blot, never rub. Rubbing a stain spreads it and pushes it deeper into the fibres. Always blot from the outside in.
Common stains and how to treat them:
Red wine: Blot immediately to absorb as much liquid as possible. Mix one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Apply, blot, repeat until the stain lifts.
Coffee: Blot dry, then apply a solution of one teaspoon of dish soap and one teaspoon of white vinegar in 240ml of warm water. Blot again. Rinse with cold water.
Pet accidents: Neutralise with an enzyme-based cleaner — these break down the proteins that cause odour. Standard cleaners mask the smell temporarily but don't eliminate it.
Mud: Let it dry completely, then vacuum up the dried mud before treating the remaining stain with a carpet shampoo.
Ink: Apply isopropyl alcohol with a cloth, dabbing gently. Rinse with cold water.
When to call a professional: For large areas, set-in stains, or delicate carpets, professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is the most effective solution. It removes stains, allergens, and bacteria in a single treatment. We offer carpet cleaning as part of our residential and commercial packages.
